Halifax Port’s Network A Case Study in Metropolitan Area Networks

Abstract
Halifax Port Authority’s (HPA) network connects more than two dozen sites over tens of kilometres of optical fibre between Halifax and Dartmouth, NS. This presentation, from the principal designer of the network, will discuss the design requirements, implemented solutions, and lessons learned after years of managing the network and overseeing service expansions and upgrades. The presentation will focus on the design of the physical infrastructure and the techniques used to build a reliable network while maintaining a simple logical topology.
About the Presenter
Dr. Maen Artimy has held several positions in the IT industry, including Head of Research and Design department, Senior Network Designer, Manager of Service Planning, VP Service Strategy, Information Security Practice Lead, and a founder of a consulting business. Maen is currently an Instructor at Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS where he is teaching several graduate courses in the field of internetworking. Maen has a B.Sc degree in Computer Engineering, an M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Engineering Mathematics.
