COMPUTER SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS and AWARDS INFORMATION

To encourage and recognize high scholastic achievement, Acadia University awards scholarships and awards to students entering the University and scholarships, prizes, medals and awards to those already in attendance. In general, please check the Scholarships and Financial Assistance page here. It is worth exploring these lists and communicating your desire to be considered for one or more of the, as applicable.

Incoming students will automatically be considered for entrance scholarships, provided they meet the criteria. 

Current students will automatically be considered for most undergraduate scholarships for which they qualify. Some awards do require an application. We will email any eligible current students, asking if they would like to apply, and will provide the award details.

Students who have been awarded a renewable scholarship may have the award extended up to four years, provided they meet the criteria. We will consider renewal on an individual basis for those students who are graduating from a three-year program and plan to return for a fourth year of undergraduate study.

For Students Entering Year 1 and Beyond:

The Augusta Ada Single Parent Award is available to a needy single parent who is in receipt of benefits from the Nova Scotia Department of Social Services or receiving similar benefits from another source. The eligible student must be taking at least four credits and have a minimum A- (80%) average. Preference is given to women in computer science. The award is provided by Alumni and Friends in honour of the contributions of Augusta Ada in the field of computer science as the world's first computer programmer.

The Creaser/Margeson Memorial Scholarship was established by family, friends and colleagues of Stuart Creaser (B.A., Acadia, '85) and Stephen Margeson (B.B.A., Acadia, '85) who died in an auto accident in Ottawa in March 1988. The entrance scholarship is annually awarded with preference given to a student entering a program in business, computer science or economics and participating in athletics at Acadia.

The Arthur Owen Hickson Scholar-Bursary in Computer Science is awarded annually to one or more students in a Bachelor of Science degree program on the basis of financial need and academic performance. It may be awardedto entering or in-course students. The scholar-bursary has been made possible through a bequest from the late Dorothy B. Hickson of Saint John, New Brunswick in memory of her brother, Arthur Owen Hickson (BA '21).

The Walker Wood Scholar-Bursaries are awarded on a renewable basis to two entering students who are Canadian citizens from the Maritime Provinces who have shown financial need. One student will be chosen from the Faculty of Professional Studies with a preference to an individual pursuing a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree and the second from the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science with preference to an individual pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science degree. Consideration will be given to those demonstrating leadership qualities and participation in extracurricular and community based activities.

Ruth Hennigar Entrance Scholarship in Computer Science established in 2014 by Ruth Hennigar (Class of 1981). To be awarded on a renewable basis to a female student entering the Bachelor of Computer Science program who has demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and community engagement (e.g., volunteerism, athletics, student leadership). Preference first for students from New Brunswick, and secondarily for students from the Maritimes.

 

For Students Entering Year 2 and Beyond:

The MacKay Memorial Scholarships in Computer Science, Chemistry and Physics. These scholarships were endowed in 1989 by Mr. Donald MacKay (Acadia 1929) and Mrs. Rose (Chamber) Mackay (Acadia 1930) in memory of their son Donald Gordon MacKay, who was born in Arvida, Quebec in 1940 and died in 1965 while working as a mechanical engineer on petroleum exploration in Libya. The income from the endowment shall be used to provide scholarships for Canadian undergraduate students, entering their second or subsequent year of study at Acadia, who have achieved high academic standing, who are following a broadly based program, and who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and personal integrity. Each year a recommendation will be made by the Director of the School of Computer Science, and the Heads of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. If no award is made, the income shall be added to the capital endowment.

The Sandra Pineo Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science is annually awarded to a superior student who is a resident in the Annapolis Valley and is in the second or subsequent year of a Bachelor of Computer Science program. Ms. Pineo (B.Sc. Acadia, 1980) was employed at Acadia from 1984-86 and subsequently by SHL Systemhouse Inc. The scholarship is available through the generosity of SHL Systemhouse Inc., family, friends, colleagues and alumni.

The Joanne Strum Memorial Scholarship established by family and friends in memory of Joanne Strum (1965-1987), the income from this fund is available for the support of a Canadian student entering the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate program in Computer Science. The recipient shall have good academic standing, demonstrated financial need and shall not hold any other major award. The award shall be made by the Scholarships, Prizes and Awards Committee, acting on the recommendation of the Director of the School of Computer Science.

The Creaser/Margeson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an entering or returning student participating in varsity athletics at Acadia. Preference may be given to a student entering a program in business, computer science, or economics.

The Paul Tom Memorial Scholarship is provided annually to an exceptional student completing the third or fourth year of the Business Administration program. Preference will be given to students completing the Bachelor of Business Administration with Computer Science. Paul Tom was a respected member of the School of Business Administration faculty from 1983 to 1993.
